Beijing Dismisses Claims by Washington While Remaining Prudent on Relations With Pakistan
China has repeatedly pushed back against an explosive report that has recently been issued from the United States, deeming this report as one-sided and politically driven, while at the same time adopting a conciliatory stance against India. Such a stance can be attributed to a balancing act being performed by China in a globally tense scenario.
According to Chinese officials, Beijing is “ready to enhance mutual trust” with Delhi. This move comes against a backdrop of stabilization of relations which have over the years remained under strain as a result of disagreement over fights on their borders as well as competition for influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
China Strikes Back against US Charges
The US report that allegedly raises questions about China’s strategy and military alliances has not been accepted by the Chinese. China accused the US of hyping up threats in order to use selective intelligence to serve its foreign policy agenda. It is asserted that the report causes instability in the world.
Beijing has asserted that its military and foreign policies have always been transparent and that it does not plan to engage in any conflict but will defend its national interests. It has been estimated that a sharp and aggressive response from Beijing is a result of frustration about an increased hostile stance of the US against a rising Beijing in international politics.
A Softer Tone Towards India
Contrary to its criticism of the US, China adopted a warmer attitude towards India. Chinese officials emphasized the relevance of bilateral cooperation between two of the most prominent economies in Asia. They pointed towards the combined interests of the two superpowers on economic development and a peaceful Asia.

China reiterated that it would address the dispute diplomatically and prevent escalation along disputed borders. Although there is not much being done, it appears that Beijing does not want to see relations with New Delhi deteriorate further, especially as it sees the Indian government’s heightened level of engagement with Western countries.
Silence and Caution on Pakistan Ties
However, when pressed on its very intimate ties with Pakistan, the Chinese government still largely evaded the question. They reiterated their commitment to their relationship with Pakistan, built on mutual respect and development assistance, but did not respond to particular concerns on security expressed in the US report.
It also shows the delicacy of the traditional ties between Beijing and Islamabad, which are an important factor in Beijing’s South Asia strategy. On the other hand, Beijing seems to be tread carefully so as not to increase the complexity of engagement with India either.
What This Means for the Region China’s message is interpreted by analysts to indicate its efforts at cooling its relationship with India while reiterating its resistance to US pressure. It is yet to be seen whether its political intentions will lead to improvements on the ground, but its message is an indication that China means to reorient itself in the ever-changing geopolitical environment.
