A 24-year-old Indian student, Sahaja Reddy Udumala, tragically died in a house fire in Albany, New York, on December 4, 2023. Udumala, who was pursuing a Master’s degree at the University at Albany, suffered severe injuries when flames engulfed the residence. Despite emergency responders’ best efforts, she could not survive the fire.
Consulate Offers Condolences
The Consulate General of India in New York expressed deep sorrow over the death of Udumala. In a statement, the consulate shared their heartfelt condolences with her family and confirmed that they are assisting with necessary arrangements. “Her untimely passing has shocked and saddened us all,” said a consulate representative.
The Fire Incident in Albany
On December 4, the Albany Police and Fire Departments responded to a house fire. When they arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames. Emergency responders rescued four adults, including Udumala, and rushed them to the hospital. Two of the victims were transferred to a specialized burn center for further treatment. Sadly, Udumala later succumbed to her injuries.

Fundraiser Launched for Funeral and Family Support
Udumala’s cousin, Rathna Gopu, started a fundraiser to cover funeral costs, repatriation, and support for the grieving family. The fundraiser aims to assist with immediate expenses and provide the family with the help they need during this difficult time.
