India has entered a new era in global sports after winning the right to host the Ahmedabad 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking the nation’s first multi-disciplinary sports event since 2010. The announcement came during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, where all 74 member nations ratified India’s bid. This decision places Ahmedabad at the centre of a landmark celebration—the 100th year of the Commonwealth Games.

The Ahmedabad 2030 Commonwealth Games represent more than a sporting milestone. They reflect India’s growing push to host mega international events, including its bid for the 2036 Olympics. The Commonwealth Sport Evaluation Committee endorsed Ahmedabad after evaluating infrastructure, governance, athlete experience, and long-term vision.
With this approval, India positions itself as a leader in modern, sustainable, athlete-focused sporting events.
Rich Cultural Showcase Marks the Beginning
Moments after the announcement, the Assembly Hall witnessed a vibrant cultural performance featuring Garba dancers and dhol drummers. The display offered a glimpse of Gujarat’s heritage and the energy Athletes and fans can expect in 2030.
The celebration also symbolised unity across Commonwealth nations and emphasised how India aims to bring culture and sport together on a global stage.
A Dynamic Sports Programme for Ahmedabad 2030
Commonwealth Sport confirmed that the final programme will include 15–17 sports. The core list features Athletics, Swimming, Table Tennis, Bowls, Weightlifting, Powerlifting, Artistic Gymnastics, Netball, and Boxing.
Additionally, India will collaborate with international sports bodies to decide the remaining events. Shortlisted options include Cricket T20, Hockey, Badminton, Cycling, Judo, Shooting, Squash, Triathlon, Rugby Sevens, and more.
Hosts may also propose up to two traditional or new sports, giving India room to highlight regional strengths.
A Modern Sports Infrastructure Ready for 2030
Ahmedabad has already begun strengthening its sporting ecosystem. The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex and the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave serve as major hubs for upcoming international events. With world-class arenas, aquatics centres, and multi-sport facilities, the city aims to deliver a seamless experience for Athletes and visitors.

Sports leaders, including Dr Donald Rukare and PT Usha, praised India’s vision and commitment. Athletes such as Duncan Scott and Jaismine Lamboria expressed excitement about competing in the 2030 Games and witnessing India’s cultural richness.
