Delhi continues to struggle with rising smog levels as the air quality dips toward severe zones. To control the growing health risk, the Delhi government has announced the Delhi air pollution rule, directing both government and private offices to function with only 50% staff on-site. The remaining employees will work from home until the situation improves.
Why Delhi Introduced the 50% Staff Attendance Rule
The government announced this decision after the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) issued strict directions under GRAP Stage III. The Delhi air pollution rule aims to reduce traffic on the roads, cut vehicle emissions, and lower public exposure.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa explained that the administration wants to act fast and protect public health. He said the government is pushing stronger pollution-control steps, along with monitoring and enforcement across the city.
How Government Offices Will Operate Under the New Rule
All departments under the GNCTD will follow the Delhi air pollution rule. Administrative secretaries and department heads will attend office daily. However, they will call only essential staff when required. This approach helps keep public services running without crowding offices.
The government also introduced staggered office timings to reduce road congestion.
- MCD offices: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
- Delhi government offices: 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM
These timings will remain in place till February 2026.
Private Offices Must Also Follow the Delhi Air Pollution Rule
Private offices across the National Capital Territory must also operate with only 50% of employees on-site. The remaining staff must work from home. Companies have been asked to inform their teams immediately and ensure smooth implementation.
Over 2,000 enforcement teams from multiple agencies are already on the ground to monitor compliance. This includes checks on offices, vehicles, and construction sites.

The government believes the 50% staff rule will help reduce pollution levels and protect residents from severe health effects. Officials also assured that they will introduce additional measures if the air quality continues to decline.
