A powerful Japan 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the northern region on Monday evening and triggered tsunami alerts across several coastal areas. The sudden quake shook large parts of northeastern Japan and caused residents to rush to higher ground.
Japan 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Sparks Tsunami Warnings
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings for Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate soon after the quake hit. Officials warned that waves could reach three metres along the coast. Smaller waves of about 40 centimetres reached Urakawa and Mutsu Ogawara within minutes of the alert.
The quake hit at a depth of just over 50 km near Misawa. Strong tremors travelled through several nearby cities and towns. Many buildings shook for several seconds, and people moved outdoors for safety. Train services in many northern regions stopped as a precaution.
Government Launches Emergency Response
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced an emergency task force soon after the quake. She said the government aims to “protect every life” while collecting details from affected areas. Local media also reported injuries at a hotel in Hachinohe.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center cautioned that dangerous waves may reach coastlines within 1,000 km of the epicentre. Coastal residents remained on alert for more waves and aftershocks.
Japan’s Frequent Seismic Activity Raises Concerns
Japan lies in the Ring of Fire, a zone known for powerful earthquakes. The country records many strong quakes each year, including several above magnitude 6. The Japan 7.6 magnitude earthquake renewed memories of past disasters, especially the 2011 Tohoku quake and tsunami.
Northern Japan also felt moderate quakes earlier this year. The region continues to invest in early-warning systems, coastal evacuation routes, and rapid disaster response plans.
Officials are now checking buildings, roads, and essential services for damage. Emergency crews are helping residents near the coast and monitoring water levels. Authorities also asked people to avoid returning to risk zones until they confirm safety.
