PM Modi Bhutan visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bhutan on Tuesday to join the celebrations marking the 70th birthday of Bhutan’s Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. During the visit, he met the current King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, the Fourth King, and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. The trip highlights India’s efforts to deepen its close partnership with the Himalayan kingdom.

Before his departure, Modi expressed excitement about the visit and called it a special opportunity to celebrate Bhutan’s progress. “It will be my honour to join the people of Bhutan as they celebrate the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth King,” he said.

On social media, the Prime Minister wrote, “Leaving for Bhutan, where I will attend programmes as the country marks the 70th birthday of His Majesty the Fourth King. I will hold talks with the King, the former King, and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.”

Celebrating Friendship and Shared Heritage

Modi emphasized the cultural and spiritual bonds that connect India and Bhutan. He recalled the recent exhibition of the Sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha in Bhutan during the Global Peace Prayer Festival, describing it as a symbol of the civilizational links between the two nations.

He noted that India and Bhutan share deep ties based on trust, respect, and mutual understanding. These values, he said, reflect the essence of India’s “Neighbourhood First Policy,” which prioritizes cooperation and goodwill with neighbouring countries.

Inauguration of Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project

A major highlight of the visit is the inauguration of the Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project, a key step in expanding India-Bhutan energy cooperation. Modi described the project as a “new chapter” in the partnership between the two nations. The initiative will strengthen energy connectivity and support Bhutan’s goal of achieving self-reliance through clean power exports.

Officials said the project showcases how both nations can work together on sustainable development and renewable energy. Hydropower remains a cornerstone of India-Bhutan relations, providing economic benefits for both sides and reinforcing their shared commitment to green growth.

Strengthening Strategic and Cultural Cooperation

The Prime Minister’s discussions in Thimphu also focus on expanding collaboration in trade, education, digital connectivity, and tourism. Both countries are exploring new ways to enhance people-to-people exchanges and preserve the shared Buddhist heritage that unites them.

Modi reaffirmed that India values Bhutan as a trusted friend and partner in the region. “Our friendship is timeless. It is built on mutual respect and a common vision for peace, progress, and prosperity,” he said.

The visit is expected to further solidify India-Bhutan relations and underline New Delhi’s continued commitment to its Himalayan neighbour.
