IMD Issues Fresh Tamil Nadu Rain Alert
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a new Tamil Nadu rain alert as heavy showers approach the state. A low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is strengthening the weather system. This system now moves closer to the Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coasts. As a result, several districts will experience intense rainfall today and tomorrow.
Districts Likely to See Heavy Rain
The IMD warns that Chennai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and nearby areas may receive heavy to very heavy rain. The weather change comes from active cyclonic circulation in the region. This circulation is pushing moist winds toward the coast and creating strong cloud buildup.
For 17 November, the rain may increase in Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Puducherry, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, and Villupuram. These places could see sharp spells of rain during the evening and night hours. Roads may flood quickly, and low-lying areas may see waterlogging. Residents should stay cautious and plan travel with these conditions in mind.

Orange and Yellow Alerts Across the Region
IMD has issued an orange alert for Pudukkottai, Thiruvarur, and Mayiladuthurai. These districts may face very heavy rain within a short period. Many other districts, including Madurai, Sivagangai, Nilgiris, and Thoothukudi, now fall under a yellow alert. Kerala also remains under a yellow alert due to the same weather system.
Wind Warning and Fishermen Advisory
The IMD expects squally winds along the Tamil Nadu coast. Wind speeds may reach 35–45 kmph. These winds may cause rough sea conditions. Because of this, the agency has asked fishermen not to enter the sea. Coastal communities should stay alert as the wind and rain may intensify during the night.
State Readiness and Public Safety
Recent rain in Chennai created several issues. In response, the government has increased its work on drainage systems and water channels. Officials continue to inspect key areas and prepare for further rain. Residents should follow IMD updates and stay indoors during heavy spells.
The Tamil Nadu rain alert remains in effect, and more rain may follow as the weather system strengthens. Staying prepared will help reduce risks during this period of unstable weather.
