Utpanna Ekadashi falls in the Krishna Paksha of the Margashirsha month. In 2025, devotees are observing this sacred fast today, 15 November. Followers believe that observing this Ekadashi with devotion brings peace, protection, and the blessings of Lord Vishnu. The Vrat Katha is an important part of the puja. Many scriptures say that listening to or reciting this story increases the spiritual benefits of the fast.
Why Utpanna Ekadashi Is Considered So Powerful
Ekadashi holds great significance in Hindu tradition. These fasts are dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the protector of the universe. Utpanna Ekadashi is especially important because it marks the birth of the Ekadashi Goddess herself. Devotees believe that the fast destroys negativity, strengthens the mind, and purifies the soul.
The Origin of Utpanna Ekadashi According to Lord Krishna
According to the Vrat Katha, Lord Krishna narrated the story of Utpanna Ekadashi to Yudhishthira. He described a time in Satyayuga when a powerful demon named Mura terrorised the heavens. Mura defeated Indra and the other gods with his strength. Unable to face him, the gods approached Lord Shiva and asked for help.
Lord Shiva listened to their plea and advised them to seek refuge in Lord Vishnu. He reminded them that only Vishnu had the power to overcome such evil. The gods then travelled to Kshirsagar and prayed to Lord Vishnu, who was resting in Yog Nidra.

The Gods Seek Protection from Lord Vishnu
Hearing the prayers of the gods, Lord Vishnu asked them about the demon. Indra explained that Mura, the son of the ancient demon Nadijangha, had taken over heaven and forced all the gods to flee.
Lord Vishnu assured the gods that he would defeat the demon. He then led the divine forces toward the demon’s city, Chandravati. A fierce battle followed. It continued for thousands of years.
The Birth of the Ekadashi Goddess
After the long battle, Lord Vishnu entered a cave named Hemvati to rest. He went into deep Yog Nidra. Mura followed him and prepared to kill him while he slept.
At that moment, a radiant goddess emerged from Lord Vishnu’s body. She challenged Mura and fought him with divine power. She defeated the demon and protected the Lord.
When Lord Vishnu woke, he understood everything. He blessed the goddess and said that because she appeared on the day of Ekadashi, she would be known as Utpanna Ekadashi. Devotees would honor her on this sacred day.
